Great changes in our history have always come through mass pressure from outside combined with receptive leadership in positions of power. President Obama, himself once a community organizer, is fond of telling a very poignant story that demonstrates this point.

It is the story of A. Philip Randolph coming to the White House to meet with President Franklin Roosevelt to push for an expansion of civil rights.

“I agree with you,” said President Roosevelt, “Now you have to go make me do it.”

That’s the work we do here at the Center for Community Change.

Our goal is to empower the dispossessed and disadvantaged millions to have a critical voice in the urgent public debates that are shaping our collective future. We were founded in 1968 to carry on the aspirations and vision of Robert F. Kennedy and we have built a formidable track record of working, mostly behind the scenes, to fuel social justice movements in all 50 states and in Washington, DC.

For more than sixty years, the Center has helped drive public policy changes that are making a real difference in people’s lives. In recent years, this has included pushing forward the enactment of healthcare reform designed to extend coverage to more than 30 million people and helping to keep alive the national debate on immigration reform.
