Editorial Guidelines
Have personal experience with one of our issue areas? Connected to grassroots organizations doing awesome work in your community? We want you to write for us!
What we’re looking for:
We’re looking for progressive perspectives in the form of op eds, videos, or other multimedia pieces. The best way to get an idea of what kind of piece we’ll publish is to read and watch some of our recent content. We publish content on issues including income support, child care, housing, immigration, racial justice, or democracy. Content should hone in on one specific topic, rather than talk about the issues in broad strokes.
Your piece should include a story or experience of a directly impacted person. If you are including your own lived experience, that definitely counts and is encouraged.
Headlines should be descriptive, state the opinion of the piece, and amplify the directly impacted persons. Examples:
Instead of: Parents Struggle to Find Child Care
Try: These Florida Mothers Show We We Need All of the Family Care Policies in Build Back Better
Length
Op eds should be between 550 and 850 words.
Videos should be between 0:30 and 3:30 long. We also encourage video series, which could encompass multiple videos on a topic that are each under 3:30.
How to Pitch
Send an email to [email protected] with “Changewire Submission” in the subject line.
Explain in a few sentences the idea for your content and the story of the directly impacted person you plan to include. If this is your first time submitting, we prefer you to pitch an idea before sending a completed draft.
If you’ve never published a piece before – don’t be afraid to send us a pitch. New writers and content producers are encouraged, especially writers and producers of color who are directly impacted by the issues we publish on. We will try to respond to every pitch and you should expect to hear from us within a week of your submission. You can expect a collaborative editing process prior to publication.
