ChangeWire is proud to premiere a new experiment in animated storytelling, “Prelude to Power.”
This piece is the origin story to the celebrated original film, and soon to be printed book, Carlos Q.I.
Director, animator, and former ChangeWire fellow Miguel Rueda of Aguijon Films shares his vision for this work.
“In this science fiction story based in some reality, Carlos represents people who are unsure of their place in growing movements for change,” reflects Rueda.
He goes on, “As an immigrant, Carlos feels his voice doesn’t count. His experience offers a relatable perspective for anyone who has waited for others to speak up first. This duality of being a part of society while still not having citizenship makes him more aware of his identity. Carlos’s spirit belongs not only to the place where he was born but also to the place where he now lives.”
In the end, Carlos discovers – with the encouragement from a trusted friend – that through small actions, great motivation, and solidarity with organizers, he does have power to make a difference. The cliffhanger of uncertainty for the characters points to the unknowns we all face – and teases the continued story we can follow in Carlos Q.I.
Rueda himself is an immigrant from Colombia, living in New York City and leading award-winning animated films through his production company.
So while this is a science fiction story, this art reflects life in many ways. Rueda hopes that by producing work alongside an institution like Community Change, people can recognize themselves in the characters – and the message of individual agency paired with the support of organized power has a lasting impact.
