On November 6, 2019, the Las Vegas City Council held a meeting to discuss and vote on Ordinance 2019-36, sponsored by Mayor Carolyn Goodman. This ordinance targets anyone camping or sleeping outside, charging them with a misdemeanor in designated areas of downtown Las Vegas. The Las Vegas community showed up at City Hall to protest the ordinance, sharing personal testimonies about how the law criminalizes the poor, will crowd the jails, and is not a sustainable solution for the homelessness issue in the city. Despite the opposition, the ordinance passed, but the Las Vegas community is determined to organize and fight back.
